The success of the sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” made it so that being a geek was finally cool, but that wasn’t always the case. In fact, the stigma surrounding geekdom has had fatal consequences for some, which is exactly what Geektopia aims to address.

Geektopia Fan & Comic Convention: A Journey to Somewhere is a multi-genre comic convention and fundraiser for the Amanda Todd Legacy Society. The fundraiser-meets-comic-con will donate part of the proceeds to the non-profit, which is dedicated to confronting the ever evolving tactics of bullying in honour of Amanda Todd who died by suicide due to cyberbullying.

The day-long cosplay spectacle will sprawl out over 45,000 sq ft of celebrity panelists, cosplay competitions, education seminars and much, much more. There will be hundreds of comic books and fan vendors onsite, servicing every genre from anime to fantasy, horror, sci-fi, cosplay, gaming and art. Some special guest panelists and speakers include:

• Tracey Moore, the original English voice of Sailor Moon

• Annette Reilly, Peter Bundic and Ty Woods from Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

John Gallagher, Concept Artist for X-Men, The Flash and Supergirl

Numerous other filmmakers, cosplayers and artists.

• More to be announced!

Fans of Cosplay will also have the chance to strut their stuff in the Geektoptia 2019 Cosplay Competition. Judges will review contestants and eliminate until they are down to two people. From there, there are two separate prizes: the J.F.F (Just For Fun) with a cash prize of $150, and the Master Craftsperson with a cash prize of $250.

While this day-long expo of comic book fun is certainly underscored by a serious tone, it aims to be a message of hope for those experiencing loneliness, isolation or bullying of any kind, and provide a space for like-minded individuals to meet, have fun and be themselves.

The event is organized by VAN EXPO, the minds behind last year’s International Sailor Moon Day festival, which raised over $5,200 for Vancouver’s WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre.

Whether you’re in search of new comic books or looking for a place where you can be yourself, Geektopia aims to be a geeky oasis where everyone can feel like they belong.
