A trio of bobcats feasting on a deer carcass were caught on camera in Port Moody last winter by a Mossom Creek Hatchery trail cam.
On Monday, the hatchery posted the footage, which was captured at around noon on Jan. 31 in the forest between Mossom and Schoolhouse Creeks, according to a Mossom Twitter post.
“Bobcats are common in these watersheds, but rare to see,” the hatchery said on its YouTube channel.
Despite the elusive nature of bobcats, they have been spotted on local trails as recently as last month.
On April 29, a jogger snapped a photo of a bobcat strolling across the Lincoln Avenue pedestrian walkway over the Coquitlam River.
The creatures are rarely sighted by casual observers and are not considered dangerous, while the current minimum population estimate for bobcats in the southwest region is just 600 animals, according to Ministry of Environment information.
According to data from the Wildlife Alert Reporting Program, last year was a record for reported bobcat sightings in the Tri-Cities with 36.
