The beloved White Rock Pier is slated to reopen over Labour Day Weekend following months of work to repair the structure.

In December 2018, powerful winds cut the 470-metre-long pier in half during a massive storm. What’s more, a person was stranded on one side of the pier, and crews were sent in to rescue him.

A report presented at White Rock city council notes that while, ” the Pier was reconstructed more than 40 years ago in 1977, it was not designed for sea level rise, current seismic requirements or the current building code.”

Following these remarks, the city states that it posted a request for a marine proposal on March 1, 2019 for a marine construction contractor to demolish damaged timber components, salvage timber planks, reconstruct the failed section of the Pier with steel piles and precast concrete substructure, install timber decking and hand rails, and replace damaged timber piles in select locations.

On April 8, Council approved the White Rock Pier Reconstruction Marine Construction Contract to PPM Civil Constructors, ULC. (PPMCC) in the amount of $3,079,740 (excluding GST).

Now, the report states that the pier will be made available for public use beginning Saturday, Aug.31. In addition, it notes that the replacement arch and light fixtures will be installed after the Pier is open.

According to the report, the replacement arch and the replacement light fixtures will likely be installed in late-October.
