Today (Saturday) marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of Vancouver’s Canada Line.

On Aug. 17, 2009, just six months before the region hosted the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the first train made the inaugural Canada Line run between downtown Vancouver and YVR. The line officially opened at 1 p.m. with an event that included celebrations across all Canada Line stops with entertainment, activities and prizes.

Those who took part in the opening day events were given a Canada Line Passport as a souvenir. Riders had to collect stamps from 11 stations through the SkyTrain line for a chance to win prizes.
There was a trio of opening ceremonies at Broadway-City Hall, Bridgeport and Richmond-Brighouse stations and everyone got to ride for free from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Just recently, the first two trains that are part of a planned expansion of the Canada Line were delivered to Fraser Surrey Docks. The $88-million expansion will add another 24 trains to the original 36.
TransLink celebrated the anniversary with a video montage dedicated to the Canada Line.
