The historic neighbourhood of South Granville has made yet another addition to its colourful collection of public artwork.

The new mural, entitled “Incise”, was painted by Drew Young (b.1987 Victoria, BC) as part of this year’s Vancouver Mural Fest. The piece features two brightly coloured lilies entwined together and abstracted using computer synthesis on blue coloured background. It’s a bold, exuberant juxtaposition of nature vs. technology and and can be found on Granville St. between 12th and 13th on the side of the Aritzia/TNA storefront.

According to Young, who acts as Curator and Artistic Director for the Vancouver Mural Festival as well as Visual Arts Director for Skookum Festival 2018, the mural is meant to reflect the intersection of the growing tech sector against the backdrop of Vancouver’s nature-rich environment.

“Aesthetically, naturalistic forms of lily flowers are being abstracted by digital tools in order to evolve classical painting towards new and forward thinking contexts,” says Young. “Sprite-like, rhythmic, and unpredictable striations are flowed through and around the ever changing forms, illustrating the micro-chronicles of ourselves living within a shifting city.”

That’s of course not the only visual stimuli worth checking out in the neighbourhood. South Granville is home to a myriad of murals, public art, beautiful storefronts, tree lined streets and more. Oh, and maybe include #vancouverisawsome while you’re at it.
