Sportsnet has just released a statement regarding Don Cherry's future at Hockey Night In Canada.

Shown here, the statement noted that "following further discussions" with Cherry after his rant on Saturday night's Hockey Night In Canada, it "has been decided it is the right time for him to immediately step down."

It was not made clear exactly who decided it was the right time.

Sportsnet president Bart Yabsley thanked Cherry for his role in growing hockey over the past 40 years, thanking him for his contributions.

If you're just tuning in, yesterday Sportsnet issued a statement apologizing for 85-year-old hockey commentator Don Cherry's anti-immigrant remarks that were broadcast on Hockey Night In Canada on Saturday.

Cherry was widely condemned not just by a social media mob but by his peers, Hockey Canada, the NHL and his now-former co-host Ron MacLean.

Earlier today we reported that the high volume of Cherry complaints put the Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council at the limit of their processing capacity, and that they wouldn't be accepting any more complaints.
