Local climate activists are marking Black Friday with a funeral march through Vancouver’s downtown.
“On Black Friday, hundreds of activists will take to the commercial districts in the heart of downtown dressed in black,” Extinction Rebellion Vancouver spokesperson Grace Grignon said in a press release.
“This solemn demonstration of grief will disrupt the business as usual on consumerism’s holiest day. Our goal is to send a strong message to our local and provincial government that they need to start offering more than nice words in this climate crisis, or prepare for mass non-violent civil disobedience.”
The group says tomorrow’s march is a “funeral service for the future of our planet, our ecosystems, and for the lives lost in the climate crisis.”
The procession will start at Art Phillips Park (625 Burrard St.) at 1 p.m. and snake its way through the streets and malls of downtown Vancouver, concluding with a wake at Robson and Thurlow streets.
Extinction Rebellion Vancouver is the same group that held a day-long protest that closed the Burrard Bridge on Oct. 7, followed by a route-less snake march through downtown Vancouver on Oct. 18.
