A Metro Vancouver transit holiday tradition rolls into service today.

TransLink announced Tuesday morning that the annual Reindeer Bus will be out on Metro Vancouver streets again this holiday season. In addition to spreading Christmas cheer, the red-nosed reindeer bus will deliver donated toys as part of the annual Toys for Tots campaign, which is in its 34th year.

“The Reindeer Bus is one of our proud traditions,” TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond said in a press release. “Whether it’s the volunteer decorators, the operators behind the wheel, the passengers in the seats, or the kids on Christmas Day — the Reindeer Bus brings us all together and brings a smile to every street corner.”

The bus, led by Coast Mountain Bus Company, is equipped with an animated Christmas tree, responsive lighting, a flashing nose, holiday carols and an inflatable Santa Claus delivering season’s greetings.

Over the years, the Reindeer Bus has donated more than 81,834 toys and $46,749 in cash and gift cards.

Toys are collected from various TransLink offices throughout the region. Residents looking to take part can drop off donations at the TransLink Customer Service Centre at the Stadium-Chinatown SkyTrain station.

Passengers will be able to catch a ride on the Reindeer Bus on some Vancouver routes during peak hours. TransLink is urging anyone who spots it on the road to share a picture on social media using #ReindeerBus.
