The BC SPCA is calling for help with medical costs for a St. Bernard that was found suffering from a week-old gunshot wound.

Brownie, a six-year-old St. Bernard and Border collie mix, was rescued in Dawson Creek earlier this month in a severely poor condition.

The SPCA’s Peace Branch vet estimated Brownie’s wound was at least a week old when he came into care, which means the dog was in agony for days.

“X-rays show that the shot fractured his right hind leg and the bullet fragment is still embedded deep in his leg,” the SPCA said.

“Brownie was in so much pain that he stopped eating. He is currently receiving medication to manage his pain and quickly regained his appetite in SPCA care.”

The SPCA said Brownie would require a specialized surgery to remove the bullet and stabilize his leg with pins temporarily, while it heals, before beginning a careful exercise routine.

On top of being shot, Brownie was found underweight, with a severely matted coat, and a rash around his neck and under his ears. His coat will need to be completely shaved and he is being treated for a heavy flea infestation.

Wendy Davies, branch manager at South Peace SPCA, said while Brownie is in a lot of pain, he is in good spirits.

“Brownie is a very docile and loving dog. His calm and very sweet temperament shines through despite the extreme pain he must be experiencing right now,” she said.

“He is quickly adjusting to living indoors and his highly social personality is blossoming as he is surrounded by people who are giving him lots of attention.”

The SPCA said Brownie would need about two months to recover from his injuries in a foster home, before he is ready to be adopted into a fur-ever home. His costs of care are expected to reach $6,030. More than $5,000 has already been raised for Brownie's needs.
