Donations of fans needed for Burnaby-New West seniors amid heat wave

Burnaby-Deer Lake MLA Anne Kang and New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian are asking for donations of gently used fans to protect seniors during the upcoming heatwave.

Burnaby politicians and community group the Caring Project are coming together to ensure the safety of seniors during a heat wave forecasted for later this week.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Metro Vancouver - Central, which includes the City of Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster with temperatures expected to reach or exceed 30C in the next few days. 

Heat warnings are also in place for Metro Vancouver - North Shore and Metro Vancouver - Southwest. 

From June 25 to roughly July 1, B.C. was under an extreme heat warning as temperatures soared to more than 40 degrees Celsius in some regions but felt like high 40s. 

It was 610 more sudden deaths across British Columbia when compared to the five-year average over the same seven-day period, according to updated preliminary data from the BC Coroners Service.

On Twitter, Burnaby-Deer Lake MLA Anne Kang and New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian and Caring Project founder Doris Mah are asking for gently used fans for seniors for Burnaby Neighbourhood House South and Seniors Services Society of B.C. 

Those who are wanting to donate gently used fans can drop them off at 105-6411 Nelson Ave. in Burnaby and 110-888 Carnarvon St. in New Westminster.
