CBC to air documentary Thursday on discovery at Tk'emlups residential school

The Fifth Estate's new documentary called "The Reckoning: Secrets unearthed by Tk’emlups te Secwepemc" airs Jan. 13 at 9 p.m. on CBC

A documentary is slated to air Thursday on CBC’s The Fifth Estate offering an inside look at Tk’emlups te Secwepemc following last year’s discovery at the former residential school.

The Reckoning: Secrets unearthed by Tk’emlups te Secwepemc will air at 9 p.m. on CBC.

“Since the middle of 2021, current and past members of the chief and council, language and culture manager Ted Gottfriedson, the 13 grassroots advisory council and others were interviewed,” the band said Wednesday in a post on social media.

Last May, Tk’emlups te Secwepemc announced the discovery of more than 200 presumed burial plots outside the former Kamloops Indian Residential School — graves that are believed to belong to children who died while attending the school.

News of the discovery prompted a national conversation on race.

“The Fifth Estate shows how the community is dealing with the traumatic discovery and talks to survivors about the impact on them, as the First Nation tries to lead the way for other communities coping with a similar tragic history,” CBC said in a post online promoting the program.
