COLWOOD — RCMP on Vancouver Island say a 43-year-old Victoria man has been hit with more than $1,000 in fines after allegedly fleeing police who were trying to stop him for suspected impaired driving.

West Shore RCMP say they got a call about a suspected impaired driver in Colwood on Saturday night, and when they tried to stop the black Mazda CX-5, the driver allegedly "sped away" and committed other dangerous traffic violations while trying to escape.

Mounties say the driver was found and arrested shortly after.

Police say he was issued several tickets, including excessive speeding, crossing a double line, failing to stop for police, illegal passing and for making an unsafe U-turn.

West Shore RCMP say the vehicle was also impounded and the driver now has 16 penalty points against his license.

Cpl. Mike Jacobson with the detachment's traffic unit says the man's actions were reckless and put himself, officers and the public at "significant risk."
