Fasting hotel workers will enter their 10th straight day at B.C. legislature today as they continue their push for job security.
The Fast for Our Jobs protest began Aug. 10 with 10 people fasting for the legal right to return to their jobs following layoffs due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on the economy. Another 10 people are now in place.
The longest fast so far has been five days, according to organizers.
Unite Here Local 40, the union representing hospitality workers in B.C., said 50,000 jobs are at stake.
Today, fasters are directing their attention to local MLAs Rob Fleming and Lana Popham, to ask for job protection. The group will also be delivering a petition with hundreds of signatures.
A demonstration is planned for noon today at the legislature, ahead of the expected release Thursday of a report by lawyer Sandra Banister looking at the layoff and recall of hotel-sector workers in relation to COVID-19.
