Weather warnings have been issued for several Interior highways.

Environment Canada is calling for up to 35 cm of snow on the Coquihalla between Merritt and Hope by Sunday morning.

“A frontal system is giving heavy snowfall over the Coquihalla Highway. The heaviest snowfall is expected from this morning through this evening,” said a statement by Environment Canada.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.”

Up to 30 cm of snow is expected on Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass.

The heaviest snowfall is expected throughout the day, easing by early Sunday morning.

Hazardous winter conditions are also expected on Highway 3 from Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass with up to 40 cm of the white stuff predicted.

“A Pacific frontal system is giving snow to the BC Interior. Snow at times heavy will continue to Sunday afternoon with total accumulations of 30 to 40 cm expected. In addition, near-zero visibility is possible in blowing snow due to strong winds today and tonight.”

Motorists are reminded weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.
