A dispute over a dead dog led to a large police response at a campground near Coalmont Friday night.

Princeton RCMP were called about the dispute at about 6:45 p.m., after a 47-year-old woman at the Granite Creek Campground was reportedly wielding a knife, and then a gun.

“She got in an argument with another camper, in relation to her dog who had died, and she accused the camper of killing her dog,” said Cpl. Kyle Richmond of the Princeton RCMP.

“Our report was that she had a knife at the time of the confrontation, and then she went and retrieved a rifle from her trailer.”

Two Princeton RCMP members attended the small campground, about 20 minutes from Princeton, but more officers from Penticton, Keremeos and Oliver were called in when the woman barricaded herself inside her trailer with the rifle. Eight officers with the Lower Mainland gang task force were in the area and also responded to the incident.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team was also en route to the scene, but the woman surrendered to police before their arrival.

“Around 8:30, she ended up coming out of the trailer and surrendering to police,” Cpl. Richmond said. “She was taken into custody at that time and then she was released this morning on a number of conditions.”

No charges have been forwarded to the Crown at this time, but the investigation is still ongoing.
