A retired Oak Bay police officer who happened to be in the area helped current members of the department catch up to a prohibited driver who had fled on foot from a traffic stop.

Police pulled the driver over last week in the 1600-block of Hampshire Road, but the person took off running through nearby backyards.

The retired officer decided to follow discreetly and was instrumental in the driver being located, police said.

They said his efforts prove the adage “once a cop, always a cop.”

The driver was arrested on outstanding warrants and issued multiple tickets, and the vehicle was impounded.
