Security guard dies of injuries suffered in weekend attack at UBCO

The suspect was arrested and detained in a hospital

The attack on a security guard at the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus in Kelowna is now being investigated as a homicide.

The woman, who suffered life-threatening injuries in the assault around 6 a.m. Saturday morning, died of her injuries in hospital Sunday evening.

She was only 24 years old.

Shortly after the attack, Kelowna RCMP identified and arrested a suspect, who also works at the university. He has been detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act.

So far no charges have been laid, but the man is possibly facing murder charges. Police are working closely with officials at UBCO as the investigation continues. RCMP said they are still looking into whether the suspect and victim were known to each other.

The deadly assault is believed to have taken place in the University Centre (UNC) building, which was closed most of Saturday but reopened on Sunday.

Kelowna RCMP adds that their thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends, and co-workers at this time.
