The City of White Rock has announced that it will close one lane of Marine Drive to extend patio space for restaurants, which are financially struggling.

The City of White Rock has announced that it will close one lane of Marine Drive this season to extend patio space for restaurants, which are financially struggling during the pandemic.

The decision to close the north lane of Marine Drive was made at the May 10 City Council meeting; the lane is slated to remain closed until September 2021.

The move will allow owners of waterfront establishments to offer more patio seating during the warmer months when the street draws more patrons.

White Rock Mayor Darryl Walker noted that many businesses on Marine Drive have suffered financially over the pandemic, "and are struggling to pay rent and to pay their employees.

"These are our neighbours, our friends, and we want to ensure that when the pandemic is over, our restaurants can welcome back all the visitors who love coming to White Rock."

Before the closure begins, a City team that includes engineering, roads and emergency services must confirm a plan with input from the White Rock Business Improvement Association, representing restaurants, for a safe, effective closure, explains a release from the City.

Access to parking for Marine Drive residents will also be considered in the finalized plan.

The closure is likely to mean that eastbound travel will be permitted on Marine Drive, but a date and details still need to be confirmed and communicated by the city.
