The body of a 17-year-old male youth was recovered at Sproat Lake on Monday afternoon.

He had been in a canoe that sank at the lake on Saturday.

Two people were rescued and taken to hospital in Port Alberni shortly after the sinking. The two, both 16, treaded water for about an hour before they were rescued by other boaters, RCMP said.

Sproat Lake Fire Chief Mike Cann said the department was called at 1:13 p.m. Saturday for a drowning. When crews arrived, they found two people, who had been canoeing, in a house suffering from hypothermia. They were told that a third person was missing.

An RCMP helicopter was seen searching the east end of the lake on Sunday morning.

The identity of the youth who died has been confirmed by his family, but his name is not being released, RCMP said.
