Soft 100% wool felt carpets called Shyrdaks, in striking but simple appliqué designs, are the highlight of the Bingo Bill Exchange popup shop from Friday, October 25th to Tuesday November 5th.
Shydraks are handmade using traditional techniques by women in cooperative workshops on the steppes of Kyrgyzstan. The large and small Shyrdaks are graphic eye candy for the modern sensibility. They are perfect as fresh and vibrant hits of interest against the subdued palette of the Westcoast fall and winter. Although originally made to decorate and insulate the portable dwellings of the nomadic Kyrgyz, contemporary Shyrdaks are now being snapped up by design sophisticates internationally.
Vancouverites Nina Watts and Ann Klaveness travelled to this little known country in Central Asia called Krygystan last March to find the best examples of local handiwork and to commission more. They are enabling Kyrgyz women to pass on thousandyearold techniques to younger generations of artisans. Ann and Nina’s company is the only one importing these unique items to B.C. The Pop up shop will also feature other furnishings and wearables from Kyrgyzstan on sale such as ottomans, cushions, hats, scarves, slippers, bracelets and more. Prices range from $15 – $3000.
