Owen Lightly, writer and chef/owner of Butter on the Endive catering company, passed away quietly on Thursday, May 29, at the age of 31, after a long and brave battle with colon cancer.
Lightly started his career at Aurora Bistro before moving on to work with David Hawksworth at West and James Walt at Araxi.
He was one of the first chefs in Vancouver to foster the idea of the collaborative dinner, bringing together chefs, artists and artisans in unique groupings, such as with his Sweater Season pop-up series.
Lightly’s writings inspired a generation of chefs and his food was always at the forefront of contemporary BC cuisine.
