A culinary tour of Puglia, Italy

The whole notion of the 100-mile diet is as old as time in Italy. What's on the plate has always been directly linked to what's growing in the nearby fields.

The whole notion of the 100-mile diet is as old as time in Italy. What's on the plate has always been directly linked to what's growing in the nearby fields. Messors Culinary Workshops in Barri, Italy, takes that a step forward in its week-long explorations of food, culture, art and wine.

Founder Tonio Creanza, who splits his time between Vancouver and Barri, is hosting two summer sessions, June 1 to 10 and July 24 to August 2.

Guests will learn how to cook authentic Puglian cuisine, forage for wild edible plant, take a butchery class and delve into the history and making of olive oil. There's even the chance for a three-day extension to immerse yourself into the daily cycle of a shepherd.

The cost of the seven-day program is $1,500; the 10-day program is $1,850. This includes virtually everything you'll be doing once in Italy: accommodation at Masseria La Selva (an 18th century hunting lodge), meals, classes all field trips and exhibition fees.
