L’Abattoir has launched its new “restaurant-within-a-restaurant” concept, No. 1 Gaoler’s Mews. The chef’s table experience will occur once per month, with eight seats available per night. The ticketed events include mailed welcome packages prior to the dinner and keepsake gifts, in addition to the meal itself. Joey Restaurant Group has announced it will be opening its first North Shore location at the Shipyards in Lower Lonsdale in 2018. The new waterfront location will feature multiple patios and extensive views of downtown Vancouver. Stay tuned for opening dates.

 

Tickets to the fifth annual Brewery and the Beast are now on sale. The popular meat festival returns on Sunday, July 23, with more than 50 top chefs from Vancouver and Whistler cooking up meat-centric dishes for ticket-holders. Partial proceeds from the event benefit the BC Hospitality Foundation and The Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship Foundation. Look for whole-animal roasts, classic barbecue, charcuterie, and more. The event also includes local beer, ciders, wine, homemade sodas, coffees and iced teas. Tickets $99.95 per person, and include all food and beverage offerings. Slickity Jim’s, the popular breakfast and brunch spot on Main Street, is expanding its hours and partnering with the owners of Narrow Lounge and The Emerald to offer a new late-night menu Tuesday through Saturday. Homer St. Café and Bar’s head chef Chris West has launched a new spring menu, along with a daily fresh sheet for lunch and dinner. New dishes include charred octopus salad with cauliflower, chickpeas, zucchini and tomato jam; roasted carrots with cumin seeds, yogurt and mint; halibut in saffron-lemon broth with spring peas, leeks and radish; lemon curd and sponge cake with lavender honey and raspberry; and more. homerstreetcafebar.com

 

 

Prado Café in Gastown has expanded its offering to now include healthy breakfast and brunch items, cakes, and housemade sandwiches, similar to what is on offer at the café’s Fraser and Fir Street locations. BC Spot Prawn Festival kicks off on May 13 - Frederique Neil photo


Tickets are still available for the popular Spot Prawn Boil at this year’s BC Spot Prawn Festival at Fisherman’s Wharf on Saturday, May 13. The annual, free, family-friendly festival includes chef demos, children’s activities, beverage samples, fresh-off-the-boat spot prawns available for sale, and, of course, the spot prawn boil. Chefs on stage include Dino Renaerts of Bon Vivant Group, Taryn Wa of Savoury Chef Catering, Quang Dang of West Restaurant, Shelome Bouvette of Chicha, and more. Tickets for the boil are $17.50 and include three BC spot prawns, sides from Grain and Windset Farms, and bread from Terra Breads. On Thursday, May 25, the BC Wine Institute’s annual Chef Meets BC Grape tasting event is taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre. This popular fundraising event in support of Ocean Wise, the Arts Club, and BC Hospitality Foundation brings together 90 BC wineries pouring more than 350 VQA wines. There will also be 15 top chefs creating plates to pair with the wines, including Ricardo Valverde of Ancora, Andrew Richardson of Cin Cin, Chris Whittaker of Forage, Wesley Young of Pidgin, Clement Chan of Torafuku, Weimar Gomez of Yew Seafood and Bar, and more. All of the chefs will also be competing in a pairing challenge to earn Judges’ Best VQA Pairing, Judges’ Best Dish, and Consumers’ Choice for Dish of the Night.
