Glowbal opens at Telus Garden; Fat Mao comes to Chinatown; Industry vets honoured

Fat Mao, the newest venture from Maenam's Angus An, is officially open as of Aug. 19 at 217 East Georgia, offering hot noodles in its spare, 25-seat room, Wednesday through Sunday from 11am until the noodles run out. All dishes priced under $12. 

Dubh Linn Gate, the popular Whistler-based Irish pub, is expanding operations and opening a Vancouver satellite in Southeast False Creek at Main and Terminal in late August. Two dozen taps will offer both Irish and local craft beer. 

The BC Restaurant Hall of Fame has inducted Neil Wyles, owner of Hamilton Street Grill, for the Active Restaurateur Award, and Chris Whittaker of Forage for the Industry Award. 

After 28 years of selling and promoting fine local and imported cheeses, Alice Spurrell, president and founder of Les Amis du Fromage, has retired. Spurrell founded the cheese shop with her daughter Allison, who will now be taking over as president, while partner Joe Chaput will assume the role of vice-president. The family-owned cheese shop has become a landmark in Vancouver for not only cheese, but also charcuterie and accompaniments, as well as their own line of frozen soups and meals. 

The third annual We Heart Local Awards have launched. Nominate your BC favourites in categories such as favourite farmers’ market, store to buy local, cheese maker and many more. Nominations can be made now through Sept. 6, after which online voting runs September 7 – 14. Nominating and voting automatically enters you for a chance to win various prizes, including a three-night stay at Taku Resort and Marina. 

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, Wines of British Columbia is celebrating 25 years of BC wines with a special collaborative dinner in L’Abattoir’s private dining room. L’Abattoir executive chef Lee Cooper will be joined by Vikram Vij of Vij’s, Scott Jaeger of The Pear Tree, and Bernard Casavant of Okanagan College. Also present will be special guests Steven Spurrier (Decanter Magazine, Judgement of Paris), sommelier and emcee DJ Kearney, and B.C. winemakers. Tickets are $185 per person and include sparkling wine reception, wine, food, and gratuity. 

On Sept. 11, join Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks in welcoming Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, as she launches her newest book, Meet Paris Oyster. Tickets are $100 each and include wine, oysters and a personalized copy of the book. Proceeds from this event will be donated to The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
