Hawksworth No. 2 in Canada; Pidgin gets new chef; New Greek resto in Yaletown

The team at Hawksworth have earned the Vancouver fine-dining restaurant the No. 2 position in the 2015 ranking of Canada's 100 best restaurants.

Other local winners included L’Abbatoir (17th), Cioppino’s (18th), Maenam (26th), Vij’s (29th), Chambar (32nd), The Pear Tree (49th), My Shanti (53rd), La Quercia (54th), Wolf in the Fog (56th), Wildebeest (57th), Araxi (58th), Bao Bei (70th), Farmer’s Apprentice (72nd), Tojo’s (81st), Sobo Kitchen (97th), Ask for Luigi (98th), and Bearfoot Bistro (99th).


It’s been a good week for Hawksworth, as its sous chef Rob Ratcliffe was the winner of the second annual Curry Cup, a fundraiser for The Chefs’ Table Society of BC’s programs, including Project Chef.


Opus Hotel in Yaletown has expanded the offerings of Opus Bar to include a café by day. The daytime offerings include Matchstick Coffee, juice from The Juice Truck, sweets from Cadeaux Bakery, Cartems Donuterie, and To Die For Fine Foods. Open from 7:30am daily.


Pidgin has a new executive chef. Shin Suzuki, formerly of Taillevent and Alaine Ducasse au Plaza Athénée in Paris, has revamped the menu, although some customer favourites will be remaining.


A new Greek resto is coming to Yaletown this spring. The Greek by Anatoli will be the second offering from Makris family, has operated the successful Anatoli Souvlaki in Lonsdale for over 30 years. Contemporary and classic Greek dishes are in the line-up, along with craft cocktails.


Glowbal Group has announced the opening of another Trattoria location, this time in the Metrotown area in Burnaby. Opening day is slated for March 12.


On Thursday, March 26, Wild Rice will welcome Pacific Breeze Winery for a five-course wine dinner. The wine-paired menu includes seared Qualicum Bay scallops, crispy sablefish, braised kangaroo pot pie, housemade elk sausage, and basil panna cotta. Lake Breeze founder Frank Gregus will also be in attendance. Tickets $75 per person.


Vikram Vij has teamed up with BC Place once again to offer additional concession options for sports fans, including his creamy chicken with chickpeas and cilantro, and sirloin beef and spinach curry. In addition, his mobile food cart will be present.


On Monday, March 23, Coast Restaurant will be serving up a special sushi and sake dinner for one night only. Menu includes tuna tartare with nori paste, roast duck breast in dashi, sashimi, stewed ebi, nigiri with lobster miso soup, and dessert. Tickets $150 including taxes and gratuities.


The Red Wagon has expanded its evening offerings to include monthly fresh sheets. For March, the menu includes chicken tagine with apricots, spiced almonds, cauliflower and saffron-scented couscous ($16), as well as a Monte Cristo sandwich with poached pears and housemade potato chips ($14) and a trio of crème brûlées.


This year’s Eat! Vancouver food and cooking festival is back April 26 to May 3, with an expanded eight-day program featuring more than 35 collaborative workshops, dinners and events taking place throughout Vancouver before culminating in a three-day show at BC Place Stadium May 1-3. Tickets now on sale.
