When a renowned Canadian retailer and an international style icon join forces to create a furniture collection, design professionals and enthusiasts alike take notice.
This week marks the Vancouver launch of the Roaring Twenties capsule collection, a collaboration between Mobilia and design darling Janette Ewen inspired by the glamour and whimsical romance of its titular era.
I've long been a fan of the feminine yet commanding shapes of Art Deco, especially when paired with heavier, more masculine palettes and textures. Our city's common aesthetic of modernism, minimalism and light has been centre-stage for many years, which I think has prepared us for a turn toward a more dramatic approach in our homes. And as we move into the colder months and naturally gravitate to a warmer interior style, the launch of the Roaring Twenties collection is perfectly timed.
In recent weeks we've seen a number of retailers follow suit by making the move toward a more glamorous – one might even say imposing – feel. CB2 recently launched its London Collection, which features similarly strong, saturated colourways combined with opulent finishes. (This follows their collaboration with Lenny Kravitz, which brought a heavy rock-meets-glam element to the store.) Another design superstar, Kelly Wearstler, has built her career around many of these same design principles; Art Deco vibes with luxurious finishes have been prominent in celebrity homes and hotels throughout her career. Now we’re finally seeing the trend make its way into Vancouver.
“I love the idea of combining old-world glamour with a little bit of breakdown,” says Ewen about the stylized edge she brought to her collaboration. “I think Mobilia chose to work with me [on this] because I have a number of whimsical ideas when it comes to design.” The Roaring Twenties capsule offers Art Deco silhouettes with forward-thinking finishes like soft velvets as well as vintage-inspired geometric patterns, yet it allows space for a personal story within each piece. Creating a home that evokes the personalities of those wholive in it is key to the design principles of both Ewen and Mobilia, and this collection stays true to that.
With dramatic nods to luxury, novelty and joie de vivre, the Roaring Twenties line offers timeless furniture and accessories that allow you to create your own style and story. When considering how the collaboration fits into modern décor, Ewen’s philosophy best sums up the connection: “I think that design is the backdrop to life. And I want an interesting, glamorous life.” The Roaring Twenties collection is available now for preorder in-store and online at Mobilia.ca.
