NATALIE LANGSTON, 24
TV host, reporter and producer for City Lights and Fitness on the Run for Novus TV, Ch 4.
How did you decide what you wanted to do for a living? During computer class in Grade 4, I announced to my entire class that I wanted to be an anchorwoman when I grew up. Some people had no idea what I was talking about, others laughed. My teacher smiled and was very supportive. Ive gone after it ever since.
Describe your dream dressing room rider: M&M peanuts for sure, and lots of hot lemon water. Fresh fruits and vegetables are also a must. I like to stay healthy and they are easy snacks to eat on the fly. It also doesnt hurt to have a stick of Tide to Go for those emergencies, especially wearing white I can be a bit of a klutz. Some safety pins and bobby pins are great to have, too. Also, a charger my iPhone and iPad are always dying!
Describe your personal style: I think it reflects who I am: modern, classy, well pulled-together, tailored and maybe a little daring!
Proudest accomplishment? I have been the youngest reporter for Novus TV. They give me a lot of freedom that someone of my age is not normally accustomed to. I am constantly pitching, producing and hosting episodes and am so proud to have been working for the network for more than four years now.
I am also proud I was given the opportunity to interview Team Canada during the 2010 Olympics for Global BC. Mind you it was in a scrum situation behind the arena after waiting a few hours to get the interview, but I did it nonetheless and am so proud to have been able to work on the O-Show with Squire Barnes for the Olympic Games. It was definitely an experience I will never forget.
Favourite:
Drink: Champagne bubbles and green tea.
Store: Holt Renfrew, Nordstrom, Macys, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Harrods.
Designer: I am absolutely loving everything from Pink Tartan. I wore a colour-blocked navy and pink dress for part of this photoshoot (pictured below) and the way the dress just hugs my body in all the right places is something I look for in the pieces I wear.
Perfume: I adore Flowerbomb by Victor & Rolf.
Blog/magazine: Vogue, InStyle, Refinery29, Polyvore.com.
Place to people watch: The seawall in West Van is a great place to people watch. It's much more peaceful than downtown and there is such a variety of people who walk along there.
Local charity: I really support Dress for Success and how much they do for women looking to get back into the work force; we women need to stick together. And I am on the executive board as an ambassador for the Miss World Canada Organization for Beauty with a Purpose.
Describe your personal power outfit: Wavy long hair with a tight, short red dress, high heels (I'm 5' 2 so the higher the better) and some great accessories.
Whats in your purse at this very moment? Gum, lip gloss, translucent powder, wallet, keys, water bottle, iPhone and earphones, ballet flats for after events, and wallet-size photos with my mom and my boyfriend.
What is your most sentimental wardrobe item? I am very close with my grandpa hes been like a dad to me. Hes getting older and his health isnt doing too well. He is always sending for things in the mail and cracks me up with the crazy things he receives. When I was younger he sent for a gold locket and surprised me one day with it for no reason, just because he thought I would like it. I will always cherish this piece of jewelry.
Where do you shop for everyday wardrobe items?
I love my girls at Topshop they always have outfits ready to go for whatever shoot or event I have. Im in and out in no time and, for me, thats super important.
Where do you look for that after-hours wow outfit? Definitely The Room at the Bay or BCBGMaxazria.
Tips for shopping for Fall? I just shot an episode for City Lights at Topshop for Fall fashion trends, so I have the scoop: emerald greens, super-sized swing coats, fur coats, classic prints like tartans, tweeds, and argyle. Layering is huge this season so dont be afraid to mix textures with your pants, skirts, and tops. A sheer dress over leather pants allows you to layer without looking bulky. Pastels are big for fall as well as leather and PVC (shiny/pleather look). Keep these in mind when shopping for some new pieces and you will be right on trend.
What fashion event do you look forward to the most every year? Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and New York Fashion Week. Locally, the Deighton Cup, which is the fashion event of the summer here, and Diner En Blanc, the all-white party, which originated in Paris 25 years ago.
Something that surprises people about you: Im actually quite a homebody...When Im not shooting or at an event, I love curling up at home with a good book, candles and a glass of wine.
Last time you cried and why? Yesterday, during the commercial with Sarah McLachlan and those sweet little puppies. They are just so cute and get me every time.
International style city? Paris all the way. Ive always said I will live there at some point during my lifetime. The way the city comes alive, it truly is the city of lights. I love how fashionable everyone is, just going for groceries or having coffee with friends. Paris sets so many fashion trends and there is a joie de vivre that is infectious.
What was your first trophy as a kid? When I was three, I competed in a lot of dance competitions and I remember going on stage at 5678 Showtime Dance Competition in Whistler to accept my first place trophy for our jazz routine. It was exhilarating.
Whats your style/beauty life saver? Red lipstick and dry shampoo; I couldnt live without them. Dry shampoo makes bad hair days, great again!
Dream splurge item? A beautiful Hermes bag, hands down.
Fashion pet peeve you'd love to correct? Oh, my Panty lines are such a common mistake that I see. Ladies, lets keep it classy. Grab a thong or you can get no-seam panties now, which are a lifesaver. Check out the new Victorias Secret on Robson and Burrard.
People tell you you look like: My mom, and Julianne Hough.
If you could have coffee with a fashion icon, past or present, who and why? Alexander McQueen. He had such a brilliant mind when it came to fashion so cutting edge.
Whats coming up for you? Reporting for View the Vibe restaurant video guide at TIFF. I am so excited to be a part of the film festival this year. I live for the rush of red carpet interviews; there is so much pressure and excitement in the moment and in a blink of an eye its over.
I will be back for FMA Shop and Dine Nov. 19-24. Im putting it together with my executive producer at FMA Entertainment Weekly and long-time friend, Andy Chu.
