Jean therapy: Doing denim differently

Denim jeans will never stop being staples – they’re comfy, go with everything, and flatter everyone. But they’re a no-no on most office dress codes, and blimey, in the summer months, they’re blooming hot.

Denim jeans will never stop being staples – they’re comfy, go with everything, and flatter everyone. But they’re a no-no on most office dress codes, and blimey, in the summer months, they’re blooming hot.

In the past few seasons, different forms of denim, like overalls, pinafores and jean jackets, have become popular. On Spring/Summer 2016 runways and into Fall/Winter, things went a step further. Pieces lost jean-like accoutrements such as studs and buttons, becoming lighter and more fluid, and there was everything from off-the-shoulder tops to kimonos.

“It’s great to see brands elevating their craftsmanship to meet the tastes and demands of sophisticated and astute female customers,” says Eric Dickstein, founder and owner of denim designer and retailer Dutil.

For those who feel denim is still too heavy or informal looking, Dickstein suggests chambray, which is typically lighter, softer and less rugged, but still has the classic mottled blue/white look. Here are our denim and chambray picks for right now – everything from dresses to a fabulous nail polish. You could even wear them all together without anyone uttering the words “Canadian Tuxedo.”

Dress code

Japanese denim is the best in the world because it’s tightly woven and uses only natural dyes. Canadian brand Naked & Famous’s Bubble Dress is made from its luxury Japanese denim – 100 per cent cotton so it’s light and breathable. Dress it up with jewellery and heels, or wear with flat sandals or sneakers. $135, at Dutil Denim.

Over and over

When it’s too warm for a coat or sweater, but you still need a cover-up, throw on Ali Golden’s Linen Coat in Blue Chambray. It’s ultra-light, loose without being sloppy, and you can wear it with or without a belt. $276, at Still Life Boutique.

Added value

Denim accessories get a bad rap because they’re perceived as trashy. This season, designers got it right – bags were embellished, while shoes were simple and elegant. For a runway fresh look, there’s Stella McCartney’s chain metal, star-spattered Falabella pouch ($847.45, at Nordstrom). Vintage fans should check out Lanvin’s charcoal denim pumps ($225, size 39, at Mine & Yours).

Talon show

We love blue nail polish but are tired of navy and baby. CND’s Denim Patch is aptly named with its cool greyish tone. It’s available in the brand’s seven-day Vinylux formulation ($12.50, see CND.com for stockists), and in 14-day Shellac (at salons including Onyx Aesthetics).
