Learning the moccasins tradition

Congratulations to graduates of Manitobah Mukluks first-ever Storyboot School, held in conjunction with UBC and taught by Rebecca Baker, vice-president of the UBC First Nations Studies Student Association and the lead organizer for the UBC Nehiyopasquaitsimowan Pow-wow. The hugely successful footwear company implemented a series of national Storyboot Schools with an aim to teach students how to make their own mukluks and moccasins. Participants in the program attend hands-on training lead by an aboriginal artist and produce their own handmade footwear and learn more about First Nations culture. The company sponsors classes across Canada with materials and artists, working with academic partners such as UBC, McGill, Carleton, Bata Shoe Museum, and the Wabano Cultural Centre. Their goal is to preserve the art of mukluk-making and to encourage inter-generational and cross-cultural exchange. A group of 10 to 15 students of Indigenous and non-Indigenous descent were slated to attend the ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the UBC Longhouse.
