Fans of Mr. Red rejoice…the popular Vietnamese restaurant on East Hastings is expanding operations west, and will be opening a second location on West Broadway at MacDonald. Look for service to start sometime in October.
Osteria Savio Volpe, the new venture from L’Abattoir co-owner Paul Grunberg, acclaimed restaurant designer Craig Stanghetta, and chef Mark Perrier (Cin Cin, Cibo), is slated to open for dinner nightly this October in the Fraserhood, at 615 Kingsway. Brunch is apparently not far behind.
Soft Peaks Ice Cream in Gastown has launched their new milkshake menu. Flavours include chocolate, caramel latte, vanilla, coffee, matcha, and original. All come in 14 oz. servings and are priced around $5.90-$6.60.
The Irish Heather is reviving its popular Long Table Series. On the first and third Monday of each month, enjoy a communal meal for $18 per person. Each meal includes a hearty main course, like chicken ballantines or oven-roasted steelhead trout, along with a craft beer pairing. Reservations recommended.

The 12th annual Corn Festival will take place on Sept. 6, 11am-6pm, at Britannia Community Centre. This free, family event celebrates the importance of this grain to the Latin American community. Vendors will serve up tamales, pupusas, paletas, tostadas, and more. There will also be music, dancing and cultural performances.
On Saturday, Sept. 19, come out and support UBC Farm at Joy of Feeding, an outdoor food and family festival that features 16 home cooks dishing up their family favourites. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Tickets are $50 for ages 13 and up, children under 12 are free, but must be registered.
The third annual Monogram Dinner by Design is back on Sept. 21 in support of CANFAR and Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Fifteen local designers will be creating extraordinary tablescapes to showcase the food of Taryn Wa of Savoury Chef Foods. Tickets $300. And don’t miss the Cocktail Art event on Sept. 20, featuring some of Vancouver’s top mixologists. Tickets for Cocktail Art are $50 per person.
Harvest Haus is back at the QE Theatre Plaza Oct. 1-3 and Oct. 9-11, serving up European beers and German foods like schnitzel, späztle and other delicacies.
On Oct. 17, Whistler Search and Rescue’s popular annual Wine’d Up fundraiser will take place at Dusty’s Bar and Grill in Whistler Creekside. Five chefs will be creating individual dishes, all paired with notable wines. Participating chefs include James Walt of Araxi, Dean Hossack of Nita Lake Lodge, Kreg Graham of Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Dustin Harkness of Whistler Cooks Catering, and Steve Bjormark of Whistler Blackcomb. There will also be live and silent auctions. Tickets are $170 per person.
