In this second installment of our "living with the pros" take on My Digs, we're sneaking into the bachelorette pad of one of the city's most design savvy industry insiders; Megan Close is one of the key figures behind The Cross, Vancouver's most desired destination for beautiful treasures and housewares. Spending her days surrounded by stunning décor finds, it's no wonder that Close totally nailed the chic appeal of her West End condo - small space living definitely didn't mean downsizing in style in this 400 square-foot suite. What I love the most about Close's home is the use of personal and sentimental items to create a sense of story and warmth within the space; by taking pieces that have emotional importance and incorporating them into her design allows the suite to show off her personality and be a literal reflection of her love for an eclectic style.

What is it?:

It's a small studio apartment in a 1960's building in the West End.

Who are you?:

I am the marketing and communications manager (and some other stuff) at The Cross Decor & Design.

Major selling feature:

The open concept and the big windows that open right up. It gets great fresh air and so much sunlight.

First thing I changed:

I added a small counter top on the pass-through. It's the perfect little ledge when entertaining.

Feature I brag about:

The space planning. When you only have 400 square feet to work with you have to get really creative.

That one conversation piece:

The headboard. Since my bedroom was going to be right in my living room I wanted the headboard to be something really special. I found a concrete pallet in an alley, took it home, sanded it down, stained it and cut it down to fit exactly in the spot. It's perfect.

The décor:

I love an eclectic look and I've been collecting my favourite things since I was really little. I really love every single piece I own.

The story behind the art/antiques/collectibles:

They really are from all over! My grandmother had fabulous taste and some of my favourite things were passed down from her collection. Working at The Cross, I have first access to some really incredible newer pieces too. I'm very lucky.

Downsides:

The size. I can't fit a single other thing in this space. When I get something new, something old has got to go and I have a hard time parting with anything!

Neighbourhood haunts:

Lolita's, Greenhorne Cafe, Adesso, Bayside Lounge, XY, Nelson Dog Park, the Seawall, English Bay.

Compared to your last place:

I had never lived alone before so it's nice that every single thing belongs to me and every choice is mine. It truly is a reflection of my personality.

Favourite apartment activity:

Entertaining. It may be small but you sure can cram a ton of girlfriends onto that couch.
