This winter, look for a new seafood restaurant to come to Gastown. Coquille Fine Seafood at 181 Carrall St. is a new venture from chefs Lee Cooper and Jack Chen of L’Abattoir, along with partner Nin Rai (Truffles Fine Foods, L’Abattoir). The large dining room, bar, lounge and patio will offer a modern spin on a classic fish house, focusing on fresh-caught seafood. coquillefineseafood.com

 

Tickets are still available for Campagnolo Roma’s Quinto Quarto dinner on Oct. 13. The whole-animal meal will feature beer pairings from Steel and Oak Brewing. Menu items include cider-braised beef tongue, pan-roasted veal sweetbreads, calf brain and smoked marrow risotto, and more. Thai Cuisine by Montri has suddenly closed. The owner, Montri Ratanaraj, announced in an email to friends and customers that he was retiring and that final service was Sept. 30. The restaurant has been sold to Hirohito Watanabe, nephew to Hidekazu Tojo of Tojo’s Restaurant. Look for the new Japanese restaurant to open in the coming months.

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, Fairmont Waterfront Hotel will host the hotel chain’s annual Culinary Apprenticeship Dinner. Aspiring chefs from Fairmont hotels in the Pacific Northwest region will create dishes that illustrate their craft and profile the company’s passion for sustainable, seasonal ingredients. This year’s theme, “From Nose to Tail,” pays homage to lesser-known cuts over a six-course tasting menu that includes duck, sturgeon, lamb, pork, beef and bison. Each dish is paired with wine and includes three cuts to profile different textures, flavours and cooking methods. On Sunday, Nov. 12, chef Isabel Chung of Fairmont Chateau Whistler will host a special collaborative dinner with two other female powerhouse chefs in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The event, titled ELLEvate TogetHER, features Top Chef Canada All-Stars winner chef Nicole Gomes, owner of Cluck N Cleaver, and Bearfoot Bistro executive chef Melissa Craig working alongside chef Chung. Nikki Calloway, acclaimed winemaker at Quail’s Gate, will be on hand with her wines, as well as top sommeliers Maryke Vandermarel from Bearfoot Bistro and Jill Spoor from Fairmont Pacific Rim.
