In an amicable parting of the ways, chef Felix Zhou has left Beach Bay Café & Patio to work on a new project, Heritage Asian Eatery (opening soon). Beach Bay’s kitchen has been taken over by chef Michael Winning, who came aboard a few months ago as executive sous chef after an extensive stint in Europe and Asia.
Silk Road, the popular artisan tea store in Victoria, has opened its first Vancouver store at 2066 West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano. To celebrate the opening, the store has launched 20 new teas that celebrate biodiversity, as well as initiated partnerships with First Nations.
The Tacofino empire just keeps growing. Another location of the Burrito Bar is coming to Yaletown. Look for the official opening later this month.
Joe Fortes’ Blue Plate Specials are back for weekday lunch. Each weekday features a different $9 special, including seafood pot pie, Thai barbecue chicken, fried chicken, panko-crusted haddock or fish cakes. Add a starter and dessert for an additional $9.
Get your Pride on… In honour of Pride Week, Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar is featuring a rainbow of cocktails, including a Cosmopolitan (red), The Seeker (orange), Sidecar (yellow), Last Word (green), Blue Hawaiian and Aviation (violet). Cocktails are $12-$14.
Lucky’s Doughnuts has teamed up with A Loving Spoonful to create the second-annual charity doughnut, Layers of Pride. This rainbow-layered vanilla-bean-glazed doughnut is topped with a candy ribbon that represents the rainbow of the Pride flag. The limited-run Layers of Pride doughnut will be available during the Pride Parade on Sunday, July 31 for a minimum $5 donation at A Loving Spoonful’s gathering point at the Denman Street BMO Branch (958 Denman) from 11am to 2pm.
On Wednesday, July 27, the 2016 Aprons for Gloves Restaurant Rumble will take place at the Commodore Ballroom in support of the Eastside Boxing Club’s at-risk youth programs. Come out and see restaurant workers from across the Lower Mainland duke it out in support of this excellent cause. On Saturday, August 20, Timber will be hosting a special live-stream viewing of The Tragically Hip in their final concert. Tickets are $40 and include Turtle Valley Bison Ranch smoked bison hip supper, a seat for the live-stream on CBC-TV, and a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society (25 per cent of all proceeds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society). If all 80 tickets are sold, Timber will donate an additional 25 per cent of the total ticket sales amount. A fresh-tapped cask of Phillips Brewing will also be available. Tickets on Eventbrite.
Get out your stretchy pants…The Fair at the PNE has unveiled its line-up of artery-hardening foods for this year, and addition to the usual mini doughnuts and hot dogs, you can also enjoy the mac and cheese-stuffed burger, a 12-inch bratwurst in a pretzel bun, the big pickle corn dog, mac and cheese topped with spaghetti and meatballs, butter chicken fries, teriyaki chicken perogies, and bacon candy floss, among other items.
