Registration is now open for Sport School, a no-nonsense name for a new athletic and academic program targeting student-athletes that will launch at University Hill secondary school next September.
The Sport Institute is accepting applications from high-performance, multi-sport athletes entering Grades 10 to 12 who have been identified by their national sport organization.
Three similar schools will open in Victoria, Prince George and Kelowna in partnership with public school districts.
According to the Sport Institute, which relies on sport science and medical expertise to support the nations Olympic and Paralympic ambitions, the Sport School curriculum will provide academic credits toward graduation in addition to daily physical activity. Athletes will dedicate half a day, every day to a specially developed (and trademarked) program called Ignite, a long-term athlete development strategy that provides [student-athletes] with a practical understanding of a high-performance lifestyle by improving their athleticism, physical literacy and fitness.
Participants are expected to improve both foundational movement skills and overall athleticism through training sessions focusing on three movement streams: sprint training, gymnastics, and strength and conditioning.
Participants can build a flexible academic schedule in support of competition and training, enhancing the skills they learn regarding nutrition and injury prevention.
