Its now less than a week before Vancouver embraces what the next season has to offer in fashion. Vancouver Fashion Week will be taking place March 20-24 at the Chinese Cultural Centre where it will host established and upcoming designers from around the globe. The opening gala will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel located at the heart of downtown Vancouver.
Designers to watch out for include a returning favourite of mine Goldie London who keeps her mix of fabrics and colours interesting. The ultra feminine feel of Espinelas designs will also be one that I will have my eye on. London Fashion Week designer Jacob Kimmie will also be presenting his collection. Expect to see asymmetrical hemlines mixed with a slight avant-garde twist within his collection.
Im a fan of black and hope to see the presence of black in this years designer collection. My favourite fabric that I hope will hit the runway is leather. Its one of the most difficult fabrics to tailor and great tailoring is everything when it comes to pulling off a memorable collection. Fall brings with it heavier fabrics for colder weather and coats are at the forefront of it all. I also expect to see the presence of bold colours such as red, blue and green.
As the buzz of Vancouver Fashion Week begins to make its way into your social media newsfeed, its also important to keep some fashion week etiquette in mind if you attending. My experience of fashion week has always been somewhat of a hectic time where you feel most inspired but also passes you by like a mirage. Here are some tips for fashion week to keep in mind:
1. Mind your outfit: short hemlines and attention seeking outfits will distract everyone from the reason they are there which is for the designer. Look for balance and if you are feeling unsure about your hemline, pair with a long jacket. Simple is the new black and you cant go wrong.
2. Respect the producer and their assistants: A lot of hard work goes into producing a fashion show. If you have been kindly asked to move from the front row please do so and avoid causing a scene. Production assistants are always appreciative of a kind audience and will probably be more likely to help you in future exchanges.
3. Keep your feet off the runway: Film crews, photographers and models are all appreciative of your efforts with this one.
4. If the show has started, do not walk on the runway to get in or out of your seat. Its extremely distracting and interrupts the show.
5. Mind the freebies: Who doesnt like a gift? However, that does not give you access to take gift bags that have not been taken in front row. Its like stealing off a hotel service cart. Its very unbecoming.
