Sunny Spot Café closes on Main Street

Northern Chinese noodle restaurant may reopen near Metrotown

Ezra Bloom laments the closure of Sunny Spot Cafe.

Thick, chewy, house-made biangbiang noodles are no longer available at Sunny Spot Café. In fact, the only thing available at Sunny Spot Café is the opportunity to rent the space, as signalled by the "For Lease" sign in the window.

I’m not sure how many days too late I was to eat my favourite noodles in the city. I knew it was going to be closing “soon,” and I had heard that regular opening hours were being scaled back. But in my deepest food-heart I never imagined it would actually close.

Turns out, I didn’t need to. Word on the street is that Sunny Spot Café will be reopening near Metrotown in Burnaby, but details and dates are yet to be confirmed.

Since making my move back to Vancouver four years ago, Sunny Spot Café had been my go-to place for handmade noodles. Or, for the more refined, my favourite place to experience the delicate flavours of China’s northwest Shaanxi province.

It wasn’t cheap – dinner for two could easily surpass $30 – but all things considered, it wasn’t expensive. And everything I put in my mouth screamed perfection. The food was awesome, the service friendly, the chairs mismatched, the bathroom in dire need of a renovation, and the tables sometimes sticky.

Sigh…

Hopefully they can capture the magic at their future location. When it happens, I’ll be among the first to find out.

Westender is following this story and will post more information about the new location as soon as it is known.
