Tacofino hits Yaletown; Gold Medal Plates gears up; Boulevard extends Sunday Seafood Boil

Tacofino  's   new Yaletown location has officially opened. The 50-seat counter-service restaurant and bar includes a 12-seat patio and a take-out bar. Look for a few new menu items, including tater tot carnitas, beef brisket barbacoa, crispy squid, as well as some new taco varieties. Open 11am-10pm Monday-Wednesday and 11am until late Thursday-Saturday.

The 10 chefs who will be competing at the Gold Medal Plates in Victoria on Nov. 17 have been announced. Competitors from Vancouver include Jefferson Alvarez, Ricardo Valverde and Ned Bell. See the full list at GoldMedalPlates.com.

Uva Wine & Cocktail Bar has launched a new happy hour menu, available daily 2pm-6pm. Four new cocktails created by bar manager Sabrine Dhaliwal include the Captain Shaddock ($9) with Knob Creek bourbon, grapefruit, peach, lime, and Palermo bitters, as well as the Abby Cadabby with Zubrowka vodka, fino sherry, orange, apple, lemon, and crabapple bitters. In addition to beer and wine specials, the food menu includes arancini (three for $5), bruschetta ($3 each) and more.

In other “happy” news, Jules Bistro has launched a new happy our menu that features $8 appetizers like fresh mussels, beet salad, cheese and charcuterie platters, and Asian-inspired dishes like a crab salad roll and Thai marinated chicken bites with pommes dauphine. Add a glass of wine for $5 or $25 for a bottle. Available daily 2:30pm-5:30pm.

Latab will be holding its next Colab dinner on August 15. This month’s theme is “Seeds” and guest chef Andrea Carlson of Burdock & Co. will be joining Latab chef Kris Barnholden in the kitchen. Also joining them will be Colab co-founder Camille Flanjak of Museum Eats and barman Peter Van de Reep of Campagnolo and Campagnolo Upstairs. Tickets for the six-course meal is $75, including taxes and gratuity. Optional beverage pairings also available.

Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar is extending its sold-out Sunday Seafood Boil series into September with four additional dates on Sept. 4, 11, 18 and 25. The communal supper features jumbo prawns, clams, mussels, Dungeness crab and crawfish, as well as potatoes, corn, bacon cornbread, dessert and a complimentary glass Haywire’s The Bub sparkling wine. Tickets $59 per person.

On Sept. 18, Chefs’ Table Society of BC will host their third annual Slow Fish Dinner at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. The evening starts with PICA culinary student-prepared canapés, and libations including BC wines. Next, attendees move through the school's eight professional teaching kitchens to meet the visiting chefs, who will each offer a tasting-sized portion of local sustainable seafood delicacies paired with wines from Salmon Safe wineries. Tickets before Aug. 31 are $89 and include a free insulated tote bag. Tickets on Eventbrite.

On Sept. 23, Les Dames d’Escoffier BC chapter will be holding a gala dinner in honour of Lidia Bastianich, Emmy award-winning TV personality, cookbook author and restaurateur. The evening begins with a Tattinger champagne reception and is followed by a multi-course dinner prepared by some of Vancouver’s leading chefs, including Margaret Chisolm, JC Poirier, Pino Posteraro, Robert Belcham, Weimar Gomez, Rhonda Viani, and more. Wine pairings include Tightrope Winery, Duckhorn Vineyards, Taylor Fladgate, and Tommasi. Tickets $325 per person and include a signed copy of Bastianich’s book, Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine, as well as the receptions, dinner and wine pairings.
