Jewelry trends that we are over: Chokers (too chokey), OTT cuffs (too heavy), stacked rings (too fiddly) and sautoirs, aka long necklaces (too likely to dangle in our soup). In our opinion, there’s only one statement jewelry piece to wear now, and that’s the dramatic earring. Whether it’s a large but dainty hoop peeping through a curtain of hair, or a dramatic pendant that’s almost like a mini sculpture.

While the high street has lots of styles to choose from, right now we’re tempted by high-end and indie jewellers, of which Vancouver has many. The pieces cost more, though some are surprisingly affordable. But unlike something from Zara, you won’t see every girl and her dog wearing them. They’re also not excessively trendy, meaning you won’t have to ditch them at the end of the season. So, while they’re not exactly cheap, you sort of make your money back on the cost-per-wear.
Here are some of our faves – four are from Vancouver brands and the fifth is from Montreal. The sixth, from French–Algerian maker Anissa Kermiche, was just too beautiful to omit.
