Two of Canada’s top chefs will be on hand to demonstrate their culinary flare at the Pride Picnic in the Park at Brockton Oval this Saturday (July 26).
Chefs Shelley Robinson and Rockin’ Ronnie Shewchuck will be creating stunning signature dishes for picnic goers from From 11am to 1pm.
Top Chef Canada contestant and winner of Chopped Canada, Shelly Robinson will prepare the vegetarian option that will include her signature cauliflower and quinoa koftas on pita.
Robinson says she is honoured to be cooking at Picnic in the Park and supporting her community.
“The food is going to be fantastic and sharing it with my community will give me the most pleasure,” she says.
International Canadian barbecue champion Rockin’ Ronnie Shewchuck will be creating his award-winning pulled pork and coleslaw in a savoury bun. Chatelaine magazine called Shewchuck one of Canada’s food gurus and in 2004 he was named by Food & Wine magazine as one of America’s greatest grillers.
“For me, barbecue is not just a pastime, it’s a lifestyle,” says Shewchuck. “Barbecue at its best is a spiritual experience, and I like to think of what I do as high ceremonial cooking.”
Picnic in the Park is part of the Vancouver Pride Society's 2014 Pride celebrations and features fun events for the whole family from 9am to 6pm, with activities like a tug-of-war, a watermelon eating contest, a high-heel shoe toss, and a "drag" race.
Out in Sport will be hosting a volleyball tournament while the Vancouver Tennis Association will be swinging racquets. Handheld and board games are being provided by the Vancouver Gaymers.
