Last week, Trinity United Church became the new owner of Rhizome café in Mount Pleasant. And its not only the cafés reputation for health-friendly menu options that the church wants to maintain.
Minister Bethan Theunissen says they are committed to preserving the values that Rhizome upheld. We want to carry on [the former owners] good work, and continue to hold the space for the cafés vibrant and diverse community of users, she says.
The as-of-yet unnamed cafés mission is to offer a safe, sacred, GLBTQ positive, and inclusive third place that connects diverse, social justice-minded individuals and groups, and helps the community to weave a fabric of a more just society and world.
Theunissen says that when she and the congregation heard the café was closing, they were saddened by the loss of Lisa Moores and Vinetta Lenavats concept of a community living room. We thought, Someone needs to keep that going. Then it dawned on us: maybe that someone is us, Theunissen says.
The congregation plans to host an Open House for the café community September 5. Meanwhile, since the former owners plan to take Rhizome with them to Toronto, Trinity United is asking for help renaming the space. Anyone interested in submitting a name can visit the cafés website, LiminalHub.ca.
