• 1969 – Canada decriminalizes homosexuality; Canada’s first lesbian collective is established in Vancouver.
• 1971 – The Gay Alliance Towards Equality is founded.
• 1973 – The first Vancouver Pride Festival takes place.
• 1977 – The BC Gay and Lesbian Archives are first compiled.
• 1978 – The Feminist and Lesbian Action Group is started in Vancouver.
• 1979 – The first Vancouver Dyke March takes place; the Gay and Lesbian Community Centre opens.
• 1980 – The first Bisexual Support Group is founded.
• 1982 – The Gay Rights Union is founded at University of British Columbia.
• 1983 – AIDS Vancouver is founded.
• 1985 – Anglesnewspaper is founded in Vancouver.
• 1988 – Canada’s first openly-gay Member of Parliament, Svend Robinson, comes out.
• 1990 – The Gay Games and Cultural Festival is held in Vancouver.
• 1992 – BC bans discrimination based on sexual orientation
• 1992 – Canada’s United Church ordains its first openly-gay minister.
• 1992 – Gays and lesbians win permission to join the RCMP and Canadian Armed Forces; Canadian military is forced to stop discriminating against gay and lesbian soldiers.
• 1997 – Vancouver’s first Queer Film Festival is launched.
• 1997 – Vancouver Chief Const. Bruce Chambers marches in the Pride Parade, the first Canadian police chief to do so.
• 2000 – The first North American Bisexual Conference is held in Vancouver.
• 2003 – BC legalized same sex marriage.
• 2004 – The IGLTA (International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association) conference is held in Vancouver.
• 2005 – Vancouver Pride Society’s then-president John Boychuk and partner Paul Allen become the first gay couple to marry in Canada after federal legislation legalizes gay marriage.
• 2007 – Vancouver hosts Fierte Canada Pride Conference and Drag King Conference.
• 2008 – Vancouver’s Pride Parade attendance surpasses half a million people.
• 2008 – Vancouver hosts the InterPride (International Association of Pride Organizations) AGM and Conference.
• 2009 – Over half a million people attend the annual Pride Parade.
• 2010 – Winter Olympics begin in Vancouver and Whistler and include the first-ever Pride House for LGBTQ athletes.
