On June 16, White Spot celebrates its 85th birthday. Here are some bite-sized morsels of its history
Founder Nat Bailey (pictured), who began his food career serving refreshments at ball games, named his restaurant White Spot because he was committed to having the cleanest place in the city.
He opened Canadas first drive-in at Granville and 67th in 1928.
He had one of Vancouvers first food trucks, transforming a 1918 Model T into a travelling lunch counter that he set up at Lookout Point, charging 10 cents for a hot dog and a nickel for ice cream.
When beef was in short supply, he created his first signature dish, the BBQ chicken sandwich.
The Triple O sauce is rumored to get its name from the code carhops used when filling out a customers order: X meant hold, O meant extra and OOO meant plenty of everything.
Today, White Spot serves more than 12 milling guests a year, buys more local products than any other Canadian restaurant chain, and has the highest average employee tenure of any Canadian restaurant chain.
