Wines for Dad and grill masters of every ilk

I’m wary of reverting to stereotypes. Here I go anyway. It’s Father’s Day this weekend. We’re also on the cusp of summer and in the throes of barbecue season. So you probably already know where I am going with this.

Backyard bbq's and bottles of red go hand in hand - just ask Dad.

I’m wary of reverting to stereotypes. Here I go anyway. It’s Father’s Day this weekend. We’re also on the cusp of summer and in the throes of barbecue season. So you probably already know where I am going with this.

Certainly not all fathers like to barbecue. Nor is it just dads (or just men for that matter) that have an affinity for grilling.  My dad though, was a seasoned grill master. I’m not sure if he actually enjoyed flipping burgers as much as he loved sinking his teeth into them, but he was truly in his element around the hibachi. The lack of pots and pans to wash up was likely another appeal. Most of all, he revelled in having all of us around to witness his prowess, spatula in one hand, wine in the other.

Sure you could treat your Dad to new barbeque utensils, however I always won points for keeping his glass topped up. Despite the casual nature of a backyard gathering, this is the opportunity to splurge a bit, especially if your father is a wine enthusiast. Let him know you brought him something special and he can decide if he wants to crack it for all to share.

As a salute to the barbecue season and in honour of all fathers who embrace it, following are some grill friendly reds. These boldly flavoured, crowd-pleasing wines can take on whatever meaty treat earns a char whether it be steak, burgers, lamb chops, beef ribs, venison tenderloin, bison or beyond.

Happy Father’s Day!

2011 Santa Rita Medalla Real Cabernet Sauvignon • Maipo, Chile • $18.49, BC Liquor Stores

The Medalla Real always a friendly and satisfying Cab at a great price. Think cassis and mint with spice and toast notes providing a bridge to the delectable smoky flavours of your fire-roasted meat.

2012 Lake Sonoma Zinfandel • Dry Creek Valley, California • $24.49, BC Liquor Stores

Aromas of blueberry pie and sweet spice draw you in immediately followed by a tangle of bramble fruit and cinnamon on the palate. Lush without being over the top, this Zin scores high for character and drinkability.

2013 Finca Villacreces Pruno • Ribera del Duero DO, Spain • $27.99, BC Liquor Stores

Robust and packed with Spanish charm, this Tempranillo based gem exudes blackberries, dried currants and licorice with savoury hints of leather and coffee. Sure to gain a nod of approval.

2013 Sette Ponti Crognolo • IGT Toscana, Italy • $38.99, BC Liquor Stores

If your Dad has ever bandied around the phrase “Super Tuscan” or happens to like Chianti, then this will likely be up his alley. Predominately Sangiovese with a touch of Merlot, the Crognolo possesses plum, wild berries and earthy nuances. Polished but still demonstrating an intriguing grip.

2014 Ochota Barrels I Am The Owl Syrah • Adelaide Hills, Australia • $42.99, BC Liquor Stores

This one is for my Dad. While I have an affinity for Syrah from the Northern Rhône, he loved his Aussie Shiraz. The Ochota Barrels satisfies both palates. From the cooler reaches of Adelaide Hills, it offers intense violet and pepper aromas with black cherry and meaty flavours on the palate while remaining graceful and light on its feet.
