Hong Kong immigrant and millionaire Vancouver real estate entrepreneur David C. Lam is sworn in as British Columbia’s 25th lieutenant-governor, the first Chinese-Canadian to hold the position and only second non-white one.

Three different premiers — Bill Vander Zalm, Rita Johnston and Mike Harcourt — served under Lam during his seven years in office. He was also a noted philanthropist who funded many public projects that now bear his name and founded Vancouver’s annual dragon boat festival.

Lam died in 2010 from prostate cancer at the age of 87.
