The SPCA said In a news release that necropsy results for the mixed-breed puppy show it had suffered blunt force trauma to its head and right rib.

A Duncan man has received a four-month jail sentence for beating a 16-week-old puppy to death.

Robert Carolan is also banned from owning animals for 10 years and will be on three years probation after being convicted of animal cruelty, Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the B.C. SPCA, said in a news release.

Carolan’s mixed-breed puppy named Dux died of blunt force trauma to the head and right rib.

Carolan originally claimed the puppy accidentally drowned in the bathtub while he stepped out for a cigarette.

However, he could not provide an explanation for the puppy’s bleeding and significant injuries.

A necropsy found that the puppy had three fractured ribs and pneumothorax, a trauma-induced condition that prevents an animal’s lungs from fully inflating

“I think jail time is absolutely warranted in a case this heinous,” Moriarty said in a statement. “It is heart-breaking to think of how much this poor puppy suffered and the terror he would have experienced before succumbing to his injuries.”
