The B.C. Prosecution Service will consider charges against Vancouver police officers involved in an incident with a male cyclist who suffered “serious harm” in May 2017 at the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain station.
The Independent Investigations Office announced Feb. 19 that it filed a report with the prosecution service after a review of a case where officers attempted to stop a male for riding a bike with no helmet, lights or “suitable reflectors.”
The incident occurred May 24, 2017 shortly after 10 p.m.
“Police reported that the male fled and was subsequently arrested by VPD officers, sustaining serious injuries,” said a press release from the Investigations Office. “In approving charges, B.C. Prosecution Service must be satisfied there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered by the IIO and that the prosecution is in the public interest.”
The Investigations Office said it will not make further comment about the facts of the case. At the time of the incident, Vancouver police did not release details of the incident.
