The Vancouver School Board started the New Year by launching a website called Your Schools, Your Community, Our Future. Its part of the districts sectoral review of its schools and services.

The aim of this project is to give our students, parents, staff and community members an opportunity to find all pertinent information around our schools and services in one easy to access place, deputy superintendent Jordan Tinney said in a press release issued this week. We wanted to create a one-stop shop for information about our district and our schools.

The site, at ourfuture.vsb.bc.ca, features current information about the VSB, listing district, alternative and special needs programs, enrollment information, seismic and heritage rankings, staffing numbers and student catchment charts. It also links to a survey that gives users a chance to weigh in on what services and programs theyd like to see in the district.

The overarching goal is to determine what programs and opportunities we need to provide our students now and into the future. This is the communitys opportunity to have a voice in that conversation, Tinney said.

The VSB plans to hold traditional consultation and open houses in the district as well.

The sectoral review was created out of the school closure process in 2010/2011 when the board examined the possibility of closing down five East Side elementary schools.

The board told staff to prepare a report outlining the educational programs and services available in the district. Whether the VSB has the necessary facilities and resources to support its programs in all areas of the district will be a key consideration when the final report is presented to the board in March 2012.

The sectoral review was budgeted at $300,000 and was designed to examine six areas of the districtCentral, Southeast, Kitsilano-Downtown, Southwest, Downtown-East and UBC-Vancouver West.
