An exhibit marking the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 has opened at Canada Place just in time for Canada Day July 1.
The War of 1812 Experience at Canada Place, as it's so aptly called, remembers this major milestone in the journey our nation took to becoming an independent country.
The exhibit, made possible by the Department of Canadian Heritage, is divided into three phases: The War Over the Water, Impressment, and The War and its Legacy. The exhibit also includes an attraction called The Canadian Trail, which takes participants on a walking tour across Canada. The exhibit is located on the West Promenade of Canada Place, 999 Canada Place.
Kits Point
The Vancouver Maritime Museum and Museum of Vancouver, both located in Vanier Park at Kits Point, are celebrating Canada Day by offering free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On at MOV is Art Deco Chic: Extravagant glamour between the wars; Neon Vancouver/Ugly Vancouver: How 19,000 signs launched a visual purity crusade; and Reading the Riot Boards, which includes a number of plywood sheets with notes written by well-wishers following the Stanley Cup riot last June in downtown Vancouver. The boards were used to cover windows smashed at The Bay during the riot.
The Maritime Museum is offering Don't Eat the Whale Meat: Rarely seen mysterious, sentimental kitschy collectables; and News of the Titanic: How the Titanic Went Down. It's also an opportunity to explore the RCMP schooner St. Roch.

Emelle's Catering, located at 177 West Seventh Ave. is hosting a "Meet the Artists Night," Wednesday July 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. I was curious so I searched Emelle's online and discovered it offers not only what looks like great food, but also a space for artists to show their work.

Cottonwood Community Garden is hosting an event celebrating the second year of the garden's honeybees.
Join the organizers for a day of food, raffle and plant sales, garden tours and workshops, a children's area, music, honey bees and native bees Sunday, July 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The garden is located at the corner of Malkin Street and Raymur Garden, adjacent to Strathcona Community Garden.
Kitsilano
Two free workshops are taking place in Kitsilano next week as part of the series Heart of Belonging: Creating & Sustaining Our Psychological Sense of Community.
These interactive workshops focus on the psychological sense of community within the groups to which they belong. The ideas apply to many types of community settings, including small groups, shared homes, neighbourhoods, organizations and the workplace.
The first workshop takes place July 2 from 2: 30 to 5: 30 p.m. at St. Mark's Anglican Church, 1805 Larch St. The second is July 8 at St. James Community Square, 3214 West 10th Ave. Both workshops run from 2: 30 to 5: 30 p.m. followed by a shared meal from 5: 30 to 6 p.m. Please contact [email protected] or Robyn at 604-837-6365 to register.
