Marpole
This weekend marks the 12th annual Marpole Summerfest event on Saturday, July 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Granville Street between West 63rd and 71st avenues.
Marpole Summerfest is a free, familyfriendly community celebration offering merchant sidewalk sales, music and entertainment, special promotions and great food from neighbourhood restaurants, as well as some of the city's favourite street food trucks.
The entertainment line-up this year includes the popular Celtic band Tillers Folly, the Sand Northrup One Woman Circus, Sylvia the Balloon Artiste, Peanuts the Clown, Ragtime Ron and the Riverboat Ramblers, rockers Noah Nine, and the Rainbow Facepainters.
There will also be a Kids Zone complete with spin art, and temporary tattoo stations located on 67th Avenue. The seventh annual Show and Shine event showcases classic cars in all their shining glory at the Petro Canada parking lot in the 8100 block Granville Street.
As part of the VIVA Vancouver program and the chART public art Marpole project, Emily Carr University illustration students will be producing on-street murals along West 66th Avenue.
Community members are welcome to participate in drawing and critiquing the chalk murals, which will be juried in the fall and eventually become a large, permanent on-street mural installation next spring. This is your opportunity to celebrate all things great in Marpole.
Hastings Sunrise
The Kiwassa Neighbourhood House, 2425 Oxford St., runs a program that offers activities to newcomers to Vancouver.
A newcomer is considered someone who's been in the city for less than five years, but Kiwassa House says most everyone is welcome regardless.
Here's the schedule for some upcoming events, including a Mandarin workshop: Healthy Relationships, July 27; a field trip to a blueberry farm, July 30; a multicultural potluck, Aug. 3; a barbecue party for new immigrants, Aug. 4; English workshops: Employment skills, Aug. 14; and a basic computer class, Aug. 14. KITSILANO AND DOWNTOWN
Heritage Vancouver is offering two walking tours this summer.
The first, July 29, is the Delamount Park neighbourhood: Kitsilano's Oldest City Block of Houses, from 10 a.m. to noon. The Delamount walking tour is being lead by historian Bruce Macdonald. The tour begins and ends in the small park at the northeast corner of Arbutus and West Seventh Avenue.
The second walking tour is an exploration of Granville Street, circa 1885 to 2012, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with tour guide, historian and senior planner Michael Gordon. That tour begins at 200 Granville St. Plaza, north of Cordova Street, and ends under the Granville Street Bridge.

STRATHCONA
Victory Gardens is offering a Gardening Basics workshop, Sunday, July 22, which promises to teach everything you need to know about how to care for a garden midseason.
The workshop is designed for both the beginner and well-seasoned gardener who has seeds or transplants in the ground or in pots, and needs advice on how to maximize their garden's potential.
The workshop runs from 10 to 11: 30 a.m. July 22 at 565 East Georgia St. The cost is $17.
Victory Gardens is also organizing its first Eat Together Garden Dinner July 22 from 7 to 11 p.m. The evening will include a mini workshop and four-course vegetarian dinner in the Tin Can Studio, situated in an undisclosed location. For more information, visit victorygardensvancouver.ca.
