Hastings Sunrise
The annual Trinity Street Christmas Light Festival is in full swing now through Jan. 5.

For those of you not familiar with the extremely popular event, it’s a friendly competition between the residents of the 2400 to 2900 blocks of Trinity Street, who go all out decorating their homes and yards with Christmas lights, ornaments and animated figures.

It’s also a fundraiser for Harbourview Daycare and Cottage Hospice.

Festival-goers are asked to vote on the best decorated home and drop their ballots off in brightly coloured mailboxes along the route — along with a $2 donation.

The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. each night and it’s free. It’s also free of cars, so plan on taking transit if possible or park elsewhere and walk to Trinity Street. A special Winter Walk event takes place Dec. 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. Make sure to stop by the concession found in the 2600 block for a cup of hot chocolate.

It’s getting down to the wire, but there are still several craft sales taking place for last-minute shoppers, including Nochebuena, named after a Christmas Eve custom celebrated in Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines.

In this case Nochebuena is being celebrated Dec. 21 at Redgate Studios, 855 East Hastings St. from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. That’s when the studio will be transformed for a festive event, including tunes and creative gifts handmade by local designers.
